As part of our recent expansion, we at Williams have been actively recruiting skilled, professional Class 1 HGV drivers. With ongoing driver shortages across the industry – a recent report from the Road Haulage Association revealed that the UK will require 40,000 new HGV drivers every year over the next five years – we recognised the need to offer not just a competitive salary but also a role that delivers genuine job satisfaction. We took a step back to explore what drivers look for in an employer, with the aim of meeting and exceeding their expectations. Here’s what we discovered.
Fair and Transparent Pay for Skilled Work
Driving heavy goods vehicles, which often carry high-value goods, demands expertise, focus and precision. To attract and retain the very best drivers, haulage companies must offer more than just competitive pay. Transparent pay structures, meaningful recognition and opportunities for professional development are essential to fairly reward the level of responsibility the role requires.
At Williams, we have worked closely with our driving team to develop a clear and transparent pay structure that shows exactly how earnings are calculated. We also ensure a steady flow of loads so that drivers have plenty of opportunities to maximise their income. Having a robust and fair compensation process is key to attracting and retaining top talent.
A Modern, Efficient and Reliable Fleet
Just as a desk-bound professional requires a well-equipped workspace, drivers need a vehicle that is functional, comfortable and reliable. For HGV drivers, particularly those on long-haul routes, the cab is where they spend the bulk of their working hours, and it becomes a living space. It must therefore be ergonomic, responsive and efficient with excellent visibility and effective navigation tools. Investing in modern, eco-efficient vehicles with real-time telematics and high-spec cabs supports both performance and driver well-being.
Good Communication and Trust
Creating a culture of mutual respect goes a long way in this business. Maintaining open lines of communication and encouraging positive and constructive feedback from drivers ensure that all team members stay aligned and work towards the same goals. Drivers value clear guidance when it matters, as well as the autonomy to carry out their work in a safe environment.
Career Development and Training
Many drivers value opportunities to advance their careers, whether it’s through advanced certifications, promotional pathways or funded training. Supporting drivers’ professional development sets employers apart and results in greater retention, loyalty and performance. By ensuring our drivers have the tools, knowledge and regulatory awareness they need to excel, we build a skilled workforce while increasing job satisfaction throughout our driving team.
Attracting and retaining top drivers ultimately comes down to respecting and rewarding the valuable skills they bring to the role. As well as offering a competitive salary, companies that maintain open communication and operate with integrity build trust and loyalty. At Williams, we strive to be a brand our drivers are proud to represent while driving our business forward. We are currently recruiting drivers.
